Carbon Management Plans

Helping you assess, report and reduce your business' carbon footprint

Every business or landholding has a unique carbon footprint, necessitating a tailored approach to building your Carbon Management Plan.

Our environmental consultancy aims to achieve this via personalised consultations, allowing us to understand your specific operations and/or land use and sustainability goals. Based on your needs, we will then create a customised work package for your organization. Factors like company size, land area, industry and desired standards (I.e. SBT, PAS2060) all influence the project scope. We've helped a wide range of clients from small office businesses to large FMCG food companies and even historical sites like mining museums to develop easy to understand step by step plans that guide them to reducing energy usage and emissions and improving efficiency within their organization. Whatever your business's needs; Tomson Consulting can adapt our approach to suit you.

What is a carbon management plan?

A carbon management plan is a roadmap for your business to track, reduce and ultimately offset its greenhouse gas emissions.

It focuses on three key scopes:

Scope 1

Emissions directly from your own operations (I.e. fuel consumption and manufacturing processes)

Scope 2

Emissions from purchased energy (I.e. electricity and heating)

Scope 3

Indirect emissions from your value chain (I.e. employee travel and waste disposal)

Why is a carbon management plan important for my business/land?

There are a range of benefits that come with implementing carbon management plans, including:

Identifying saving
opportunities

Pinpointing ‘carbon hotspots' (Areas with the highest emissions) allows you to identify cost-saving measures. At the end of the day, reducing energy use tends to translate into lower energy bills.

Improving efficiency across your organisation

Once you build a deeper understanding of how energy is used across your business, it becomes easier to see where inefficiencies are happening, and where energy and other resources are being wasted. This then allows for targeted streamlining of your operations.

Enhancing your
image

Consumers are increasingly conscious of a company's environmental impact. A strong carbon management plan demonstrates your commitment to sustainability, which can boost your reputation and potentially attract environmentally conscious clients/customers.

Establishing systems

Our carbon management plans often require clients to implement or refine their data collection systems (For example, we may require information about employee commuting for a scope 3 analysis). These new data management/collection systems can have wide-ranging benefits beyond emissions tracking.

Futureproofing

Many regulatory bodies are implementing carbon reduction policies. Having a plan in place now positions your business for compliance and avoids potential disruptions. Improving efficiency, and planning for energy generation, and/or storage, through installation of PV and / or batteries, can reduce the impact of future price spikes.

What are the potential cost savings or financial benefits of implementing a carbon management plan?

The cost savings from a carbon management plan vary depending on your business's unique energy consumption and operations. All our reports will include a detailed cost savings analysis specifically tailored to your situation. Our tailored analysis will consider:

 Your current carbon footprint

This helps us identify areas with the most significant potential for reduction.

 Recommended actions

We'll outline specific strategies to reduce your emissions, such as implementing energy-efficient practices or upgrading equipment.

 Payback period

We'll estimate how long it will take for the cost savings from these actions to offset the initial investment

What metrics are used to measure the success of a carbon management plan?

We track your progress using a combination of metrics that provide a clear picture of your environmental impact and cost savings:

Tonnes of CO2 saved

This is the most common metric, directly measuring the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions achieved through your implemented plan. We'll track this annually and compare it to your baseline emissions to show progress.

Carbon Intensity

This metric goes a step further, expressing CO2 emissions per unit of product you manufacture or service you deliver. This allows for apples-to-apples comparisons over time, even if your production volume fluctuates.

Lifetime Emissions Analysis

We can also calculate the total projected emissions associated with your product or service across its entire lifespan. This allows you to identify areas for long-term reduction strategies and ensures your progress isn't overshadowed by short-term fluctuations.

Is this a platform-based company or will I have a person to help me?

We differentiate ourselves from other platform-based companies, by making sure that every client has a dedicated person managing their project. You will have their phone number and email address and will be able to pick up the phone and speak to them if you have questions. We will schedule regular check ins. If you'd like to see your energy and carbon emissions decrease, in real time, we do have an optional online platform where you can track your business' progress towards your decarbonization goals.
